Aziza Gril-Mariotte — The Book of Printed Fabrics
The history of printed fabric begins in India and arrives, centuries later, in the factories of Europe. Mulhouse, in the far east of France, was one of the country’s great textile centres at the beginning of the nineteenth century, and it is home today to the Musée de l’Impression sur Étoffes — a landmark institution for fashion designers.
Aziza Gril-Mariotte directed it between 2019 and 2022, before taking the helm of the Musée des Tissus et des Arts décoratifs in Lyon. She has organised the museum’s collection into nine chapters. The first volume traces the journey of designs from India to Europe, including toile de Jouy and new colour ranges. The second moves through cashmere motifs, Second Empire florals, and, finally, the avant-gardes. In total, nearly 900 pieces from four continents.
Two hardcover volumes in a slipcase that weighs over six kilograms. A book to be consulted at leisure and left on display, because it is difficult to close without having discovered a new print.
