Cabana — Casa Cabana
“A deliberately opulent counterpoint to an often minimalist and antiseptic world.” That is how Aerin Lauder describes, in the foreword, the universe of Martina Mondadori: pattern on pattern, colour, and the art of entertaining at home.
Mondadori grew up in Milan, daughter of the chairman of one of Italy’s largest publishing houses, in homes decorated by Renzo Mongiardino. In 2014 she founded Cabana, the cult interiors magazine. In Casa Cabana she brings that aesthetic to every corner. High-gloss photographs, personal essays, and Italian recipes journey through some of the world’s most elegant interiors — the setting for Casa Cabana’s collections and Mongiardino’s fabrics — and linger on the details: tablecloths, tableware, glassware, and cushions. One section, “Flowers on Our Table,” is devoted to coloured table linen and floral china.
Her circle of creatives does the rest. Decorators Michael Smith and Robert Kime, and photographer Miguel Flores-Vianna, share tips and memories; Smith likens a good dinner to gathering around an ancient bonfire. The multi-talented Patrick Kinmonth writes about life in the countryside; gallerist Jamie Creel shows how to set an unconventional table; illustrator Angelica Hicks contributes her vitello tonnato; and cook Skye McAlpine, a peach and saffron crostata.
Each copy is bound in one of four fabrics that Cabana created with Schumacher (Sasha Diamond Ikat, Daria Paisley, Floral Sisal, or Saz Paisley), chosen at random. The cover that arrives is always a small surprise, and what lies inside is an invitation to catch Cabana’s singular joie de vivre.
